We all know cannabis is hot, but one of the most exciting elements of the booming industry is the growing market for edibles. In 2018, candies, cookies, and other pot-infused treats made represented a $2.3-billion market. That number is predicted to more than double in the next 5 years to more than $5.3-billion, as smokers add munching to their favorite ways to consume and newbies choose edibles over other methods.

But eating cannabis can be tricky. The effects take longer to kick in than with smoking (30 minutes to 2 hours), and once they do, they often hit harder and last longer, making it hard to know how much to use. Whether you’re new to cannabis or a seasoned consumer trying edibles for the first time, here are 6 tips for getting the dose right.

Read before you eat

Edible cannabis products are labeled like packaged foods, but instead of listing calories, labels for weed-infused food and drink list the respective milligrams of THC and CBD. And take note, that number is per serving, and usually, a serving is not the whole package or even a substantial portion of it.

Usually, you’ll find that the standard recreational dose of 10 mg of THC is contained in a single serving of an edible.

Know yourself

Regardless of how often you use cannabis, it’s important to know your tolerance so you have a good time and avoid getting too high. Most edible companies recommend trying a half-dose — so, 5 mg — or less for the first time. That will let you comfortably get a sense for how edibles affect you.

Be patient

Unlike smoking, eating cannabis will not get you immediately high. So, start slowly. Wait at least 30 minutes to 2 hours for your first dose to kick in. If you still don’t feel anything at that point, go ahead and try the second half. But, again, give it time to take effect. As tempting as it may be, don’t start snacking on your edibles because you don’t feel the effects right off the bat. That could be the start of an unwanted wild ride.

Eat first

Especially when you’re new to edibles, avoid consuming them on an empty stomach. If you do, you’re likely to feel the effects more than you intended. Instead, try eating a light meal first, then enjoy your edible in place of dessert.

Get comfortable

To help ensure your experience is as enjoyable as possible, spend some time setting yourself — mentally, socially, and physically. This is especially important if you’re not experienced with cannabis edibles, but it’s worth keeping in mind every time you use. Make sure your head is already in a good place, surround yourself with people you trust, and find a comfortable, safe location.

Relax

Used thoughtfully, edibles can be a very relaxing and fun way to get high, so get ready to kick back and enjoy the ride. If you accidentally consumed more cannabis than intended or got too high and don’t like it, that can be scary. But letting your mind spiral won’t help. Instead, do your best to stay calm, drink some water, and remember that the feeling will pass.
