Calling all seniors! Are you one of the many seniors who is considering using cannabis, but unsure of the cannabis compounds or methods of consumption? Cannabis could be right for you. I’m going to break down the two major compounds and the methods of consumption.
The two main compounds of cannabis are THC and CBD. THC is the psychoactive compound in cannabis. It is good for pain relief, reduction of nausea and vomiting. It also works as an appetite stimulant and suppresses muscle spasms. Higher levels of THC cause a state of euphoria and a head high. CBD is the non-psychoactive compound. It is shown to be good for anxiety, insomnia, immune function, relaxation, and reduction in inflammation. CBD causes a nice body high allowing you to feel relaxed. CBD and THC work synergistically with each other, meaning their combined effects are more powerful than the individual affects.
As far as methods of consumption there are many ways to consume. I have found many seniors find topicals extremely useful for arthritic pain, nerve pain, and muscle pain. You can find topicals in both CBD only and THC/ CBD combination, however, the CBD Salve is only sold medically. You can find the THC/CBD combination both medically and recreationally. Topicals are unique in that they do not offer, in most cases, a psychological “high”. Instead, the experience is therapeutic. Please note, that cannabis effects everyone differently.
Edibles and tinctures are another way to consume. Both Edibles and tinctures can be consumed orally and take anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours to start taking effects. When trying edibles or tinctures, you must start dosing very low and wait at least 2 hours before consuming anymore. Taking too much can lead to anxiety, heart racing, and/or extreme fatigue. Forms of edibles include pills, baked goods, chocolates, suckers, gummies, drinks, and lozenges. Tinctures come in a dropper or spray doses. Always remember to start low and go slow.
Vaping or vaporizing is the last form of consumption I’ll talk about. You can vape with a cartridge and a battery or shatter and wax. The effects of vaping are instant with no wait time so you can dose properly within a matter of seconds and have relief. You may have some concerns with vaping because you are inhaling into your lungs. If this is a concern for you we definitely suggest topicals or edibles.
I know walking into a dispensary can be very overwhelming especially if it is your first time using cannabis. Budtenders on both the medical and recreational sides are extremely knowledgeable in all products and all consumption methods. There are no stupid questions so please don’t hesitate to ask your budtenders they’re more than willing to help you.
